Fairytale Fights – Preview

by on Dec.05, 2009, under Previews, Previews/Reviews

You remember back in the days of old, when we had demos on discs, and some of them had time limits? Ahh, those were the good old days indeed. But, as they say, the good old days should stay in the good old days. Which would go some way to explaining why I didn’t enjoy my time with Fairytale Fights.

Yes, yes, it’s going to be another one of THOSE previews. You know, where I remain skeptical throughout the whole thing and never give a final judgment, and if I do I usually hate it. Except Left 4 Dead 2. But whatever. Fairytale Fights has actually been out for a little while, but since no one bought it first time round, developer Playlogic has decided to slash the price (new price unknown) and release a demo. Why they didn’t do this in the first place is beyond me, but oh well. On with the preview!

The premise to Fairytale Fights is actually pretty good. The old legends of the fairytale world, Red Riding Hood, The Emperor and so on, are being challenged for their fame by some young upstart, and people have forgotten about them. So, as most people do, they decide to go out on a killing spree and defeat the new boys in town and reclaim their thrones.

Not that the demo shows any of this. In fact, all that you get is a white room, about a dozen enemies and a ninety-second timer. Yes, ninety seconds. As if to add insult to injury, it isn’t even a fun ninety seconds. The controls are truly strange; you use to right analog stick to attack (a la Too Human, one of the worst games ever made), A to jump, B to… push, if I remember correctly, RB to pick up items and weapons, and RT to trigger a special attack. So basically, you hammer the right stick towards the enemies you want to kill over and over until they die. Why couldn’t this be done with a face button? Then you wouldn’t have to stop attacking to jump, and vice versa.

The graphics are mediocre at best. Every character on the screen looks like they belong on an original Xbox game, which detracts heavily from the experience in my view. I can’t tell you about the environments since all the action took place in a white room. The only redeeming factor was the amount of blood and gore on screen, since every enemy bleeds like they’re in a Tarantino flick and it all stays on the floor for you to run around in.

The sounds are pretty dull as well. You can choose between Rock or Classic music to play in the background, so obviously I chose Rock, but it’s pretty basic stuff that wouldn’t even find it’s way onto a Dynasty Warriors soundtrack. There’s an assortment of grunts from all the characters, and they yell as they die, but it’s all pretty standard stuff that they could’ve put more humour into.

Perhaps the best thing about this was that it was short. After your allotted one minute and thirty seconds are up, a giant walks across the screen and crushes every enemy, and you get presented with a grade screen (I scored a B, in case you were interested). What a waste of an ending to a waste of 90 seconds. That said, what with the price cut, I might just buy it and review it for the laughs. How does that sound to you guys?

Fairytale Fights is already out now, but as previously mentioned the price is going to drop, so now would probably be the best time to buy it. If you want to.
